Hi! My Name Is...

Having been inspired by my children’s back to school name tags that list all of their vital information, I have decided to fashion one of my own to save myself some time and irritation in these hectic first days.

I figure that wearing this bad boy around my neck could potentially save me 20-30 unwanted conversations and save my kids years of therapy.

But, since this sticker use would probably be viewed as distasteful, I will brace myself for the looks, questioning glances at my abdomen and endless banter that goes hand in hand with traveling with my entourage.  I will take pride in people's questions of wondering how I do it, secretly assuring myself that they're just jealous of my Super Mothering skills.  I will eagerly anticipate all new encounters, waiting, wondering what people are going to ask.

Or I will hurry to and from places, avoiding eye contact and passing out constipated smiles as responses when I do in fact get cornered.  Either way we go, it's going to be a heck of a school year!

Betsey - you are not alone - we attended out daughter's kindergarten open house last night and were left with a bit of a dark feeling in our stomachs. I fortunately work in a school setting and see on a daily basis the commitment and love educators pour into their day so I could rationalize it away pretty easily. My wife on the other hand (also a cynic) was struggling. She expressed that she was not ready. In so many ways our first born is more peer than the others so we will miss her in that way that you miss a kid as they age. We talked about being somewhat sad that she will most certainly lose some of the innocence she still maintains. We hope that she can adapt to social situations that maybe are more typical (without our quirkiness, dry humor, sarcasm, and honesty). All of these things make me worry and at the same time make me so proud of our little peanut and this next important step in her life.

I love the addendum to the name tag! A name just doesn't say enough. I immediately wanted to make my own, so I did. (At my blog here: http://www.ericmatas.com/2009/09/hi-my-name-is.html )

And, I also made a quick, easy template so that others could join the Hi! My Name Is craze! (Template is at the end of my blog.)
