Do You Know What a Marathon Is?

This whole winter thing is really starting to get to me.  Spending all day, everyday cooped up indoors, in the basement (the only completely childproofed room), with my kids is a recipe for disaster.

The problem lies in the fact that I am just not creative enough to keep them entertained all day.  There is only so much “puhtending” and Barbies that one person can play and still keep her last shred of dignity.  So, what do I do?  I turn to the TV.

Yes, that glorious glowing box is indeed the babysitter for my children.  It is the sacred friend I turn to when I must compulsively check my email and Facebook, desperately searching for contact with the outside world.

It is the dependable, steadfast rock in my world that is always there ready and waiting when everything else is in turmoil.  It is the basis on which I schedule my day.

Oh?  Handy Manny’s on?  Time to get ready for school!

Is that Hannah Montana?  After this show, it’s time for bed.

To me, TV is family and not something that should be scorned or shunned.  Rather, it should be looked at as a sister or brother that you really like, but know would drive you crazy if you were with them all the time.

I had a proud moment today.  Brooklyn and Kyan were cuddled up watching Sponge Bob (a show that I could do without, but it’s not TV’s fault), and an upcoming marathon was announced.

Brooklyn looked at Kyan and said, “Buddy, do you know what a marathon is?”

Perplexed, Kyan shook his head no.

“Well,” She continued, “it’s a special day where they play all of your shows all day long.”

My heart swelled with pride knowing that at the delicate age of 5 that she had already gained the knowledge of an art form that has occupied many a weekend for me.

I greatly look forward to future days where we, as a family, can sit with and stare endlessly at our most beloved friend, watching a marathon of shows we all enjoy.

Until that day comes, I’m just going to have to stick out this hellish winter singing Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?, knowing that I have introduced my children to a lifelong companion.
